Boys Don't Cry - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

Boys Don't Cry - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

I was thoroughly impressed when I saw Boys Don’t Cry at this years Fringe. While not a perfect show, it offered some extremely solid entertainment and a maturity well beyond the years of the shows creator Matteo Lewis.  The music especially is quite well done. Much like my other love of Fringe, it leans heavily on a musicality similar to other shows like Next to Normal and Dear Evan Hansen. The music is very reminiscent of these other shows and it has a very similar sense of pathos to the entire production. With that being said, musically the show...

Resistance Improvised - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

Resistance Improvised - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

I can honestly say that I have never seen a show quite like this. The game being one of my favourite games I was fascinated to see how the ‘traitor in our midst’ structure would translate to the stage. And the answer is, it’s big and silly and goofy, but incredibly fun and well done. Now being improv, this show will live and die by its performers. And this show often really delivers. There were many hilarious moments throughout the production that left me in stitches. Unfortunately I can’t promise every show will be as raucous and hilarious as the...

It's Getting Hot in Here - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

It's Getting Hot in Here - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

Again I find myself at another Fringe Sketch show. By now, it should be known that I’m not the biggest fan of them, but I wanted to applaud this group for at least taking a theme and running with it in a firm direction. In many ways, this collection reminded me of an Air Farce sketch. The fingerprints of that are all over this production and the influence is undeniable. I half expect Luba Goy to jump out and join the ensemble at any given moment. The ensemble itself is fine. Everyone is lovely and is clearly having a good...

Mayhem At Miskatonic TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

Mayhem At Miskatonic TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

What I truly love about Pointed Cap Playhouse is that they so effortlessly push the boundaries of burlesque in new and exciting territory. They are masters at incorporating sexy, flirty fun into a script that is always accessible, and well, sexy. Now I am not a particularly sexy person. Me and burlesque have a curious history of appreciation with consent and it’s strange to go into a burlesque experience and judge it according to the merits of story and dance. Burlesque is never known to have these elements but the way they incorporate the standard burlesque tropes into engaging and...

Carpe Into My DM's - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

Carpe Into My DM's - TORONTO FRINGE 2019 REVIEW

Carpe into my DM’s is another fringe sketch show, but is the strongest I’ve seen so far. Conceptually the show hinges on a theme that once again, doesn’t fully integrate into all the pieces, but with a strong emphasis on incredible call backs and a near perfect theme, it finds its way into some great concepts that deliver in a spectacular way.  What they do better than anyone else is callbacks. This show is rife with them, and manages to truly thrive because of them. Jokes that seem throwaway are incorporated later in some truly clever and creative ways that...
