Wizard Of One

It can be a real treat when you watch a capable performer dive not only into their own character work, but to push it as far as you feel someone could.

In Wizard of One - Neil James not only reimagines the Wizard of Oz in a fun, campy way- but he does it by portraying all of the characters onstage at once with fantastic character work, great movement and a textbook example of pitch perfect voice work.

Does this piece rely heavily on a knowledge of Wizard of Oz? Of course. But that's hardly a problem considering it is the most viewed movie of all time. The reimagining works well and is certainly a challenge for one man to play literally every part at the same time - but overall the piece is cohesive and fun.

The final ten minutes are worth the price of admission by itself with a brilliantly choreographed one-man fight scene, and a hilarious twist on the witch melting (that made me wish more zany lines like that were throughout) - overall this is a well done show with plenty of heart, talent and skill to go with it.
