CSS Best of Fest Nominee
I went in not knowing what to expect with this show. Would my religious trauma background be triggered full force? Would I hate the music? Do I even like Mormons?
I am pleased to respond, that this show absolutely surpassed my expectations many times over.
I shouldn't be surprised. Steven is a genius. His talent is so clearly on display from the very beginning of this production that he effortlessly guides the audience through issues of identity, acceptance and paternal expectations with a great handle on character work and one of the best voices of the Fringe.
The fact that he does this show without a microphone in such a large venue and I had no issues hearing him over the music is incredible. The music itself is very period appropriate, but what's really remarkable about this piece is how easily this show would work on a bigger stage. Watching him onstage play all the characters (and well I might add) is a tour de force- but this could be a major broadway production with a cast of dozens and would work just as well. This feels like a show that will grow in an incredible way- and with such a talent at the helm- I fully expect that it will.
