One Small Lie: Martin Dockery - Ottawa Fringe 2025 Review

One of the most difficult things to do onstage is to hold someone's attention for any period of time. How can you make words interesting enough to hold the imaginations of those watching?

It's not easy, but with enough humour, intrigue and intelligence it can be done.

And damn, Martin Dockery has done it again.

This show is a vibe. The use of lamps as the lighting is exciting and psychedelic in a unique way. He has this show times down to the second and his use of language is precise, careful and measured- but feels off the cuff and authentic.

This is theatre sharp enough to cut. It's smart theatre done well and with an intensity that is rarely experienced onstage.

He's really fucking good at what he does.

From the moment he starts talking he lures you in with intrigue and humour that then turns into something bigger, darker and more intense. He can keep the entire room engaged and on the edge of their seat using only words and lamps and a cellphone that shows how much impact you can have with minimal props.

Martin Dockery is a masterful storyteller and his shows only get better with time. One small lie is another feather in his already impressive cap, and certainly not one to be missed.
