My dad died and all I got was this show - Calgary Fringe 2025 Review

My dad died and all I got was this show - Calgary Fringe 2025 Review

I walked into this show expecting a dark comedy about familial relations - and on the one hand I got it, but not in the way I expected.

Rachel Ruecker is a very charismatic performer. She has a background in stand up comedy and when she hits her stride can float through the pieces in a major way.

The show itself is more of a retelling of her understanding of connections and how she relates and craves mature relationships. She explores connections to several young men in her life and briefly touches upon ideas of friends.

The show itself does give Rachel many chances to shine, but does seem to lack a bit of intentionality. A collection of props are brought out at the beginning - but never fully used in a way that justified their reason on stage. I had expected a Checkov's gun situation where the items brought on stage are given the reason to be there, but I never found that the situation to justify them happened. It was a strange choice.

The biggest strength is Rachel here, and she does a great job at connecting and making the audience feel warm and welcome. Her comedy is memorable and she herself is incredibly endearing. I see a great deal of potential in her and this show, and look forward to seeing where she goes with things from here!
