Elliot Wengler Jokemon - Orlando Fringe 2025 Review

Plenty Of Charm And er...

One of the best things about Fringe is you can find a very specific type of show I call "The Hyperfocus Show." Where someone, usually neurodivergent (Represent!), takes something that they enjoy and creates a show sharing their knowledge of it with the world.

Elliot's show is that in spades.

This show is a love letter, hyperfocus show to the worlds biggest entertainment franchise. There's an enthusiasm here and a style of comedy that combines Demitri Martin and James Veitch. Armed with PowerPoint and a silly wit, Elliot effectively creates a blanket of puns based around all of the original 150 Pokémon and occasionally sprinkles in his own anecdotes about his relationship to the franchise.

The biggest strength here is Elliot. He's charming and sweet and has abundant energy which makes this pun-filled adventure fun.

Now, your enjoyment of this show does depend almost entirely on a previous knowledge and relation to Pokémon. As a Fringe show, it could benefit from more personal stories about his own experiences which would help franchise newcomers or those unfamiliar with pocket monsters become engaged and engrossed - but for what it is, this piece is light hearted, fun and a nostalgic trip for anyone who grew up with the franchise.

I am Matti McLean and I am currently in Orlando Fringe presenting A CANADIAN EXPLAINS EUROVISION TO AMERICANS

The Eurovision song I'd pair with this show is Norway 2022 - Subwoolfer's Give That Wolf A Banana - A silly song about space wolf from the moon who are here to eat your grandma.
Perhaps the most Pokémon thing to ever compete...
